Brian & Yvonne - Happy Birthdays !

Rosie and I travelled to Bexhill-On-Sea last Sunday to attend a double birthday celebration for Brian’s 65th and Yvonne’s 60th. It was good to see them again and we met some nice people – everyone was very friendly.

It was a most enjoyable afternoon – and everything so well organised too !   The music was supplied by Brian’s friends from the White Horse Folk Club open mic nights and a varied line up it was too. I was privileged to get up and do my quick five minute slot. Looks like I’ll have to try and get myself down to the White Horse Open Mic Night before too long !  There was even magic as well, performed by Reg, who Brian and Yvonne met on BBC’s ‘BargainHunt’ !  Oh, and of course, the venue and the food … superb !

So, birthday congratulations once again and big thank you for an enjoyable Sunday.

Meanwhile, don’t forget Thursday Jam Nights. We’re at the Middlesex Arms every Thursday, so if you haven’t been lately … come down and play some music !

BFN,    Rob.

Hello again !

Well, Robfest is over now for another year and what a great Robfest it turned out to be. The specially invited audience came from miles around on Sunday, from all over the country in fact ;  from Yorkshire, Birmingham, Lincolnshire, Portsmouth and even from next door.

Riff Raff performing at Robfest 2012

The weather was a concern for a while, with heavy showers throughout the morning hindering final preparations. Then, at about midday, a cloudburst producing torrential rain, threatened to put an end to the outdoor extravaganza. Plan B was was being prepared – an indoor extravaganza !  However, we needn’t have worried. After all, this is Robfest we’re talking about and in the end, the weather lived up to true Robfest tradition with an afternoon and evening of bright sunny weather, drinks, food and live music from, among others, Riff Raff !

Yes, Riff Raff were there as usual, playing a selection from their set of classic covers … plus … an added bonus of two tracks from their new album, ‘Hands On’. This is the first time the band have played any of their own numbers live !  It also marked ten years of Riff Raff.  Yes, Riff Raff were formed in the summer of 2002 … Is there a song there somewhere ?   Anyway, special thanks to Joel Ogden and Peter Callow for filling in on bass in the absence of Riff Raff bass man Pete ‘Dick Love-It’ Atkins, who had the audacity to go on holiday when Robfest was on !

So all in all, a momentous occasion that beat the weather !  … Hope everyone had a good time !  You can re-live this auspicious ocassion, or see what you missed by clicking on this Robfest 2012 Photos & Video  link to see all the highlights !  Hope you enjoy them !

Riff Raff at Robfest 2011

Well, no sooner had the countdown to the Olympics finished, than the countdown to Robfest began.  Yes folks, there’s just 6 days to Robfest 2012.  The annual extravaganza promises to have the usual treats in store this year, plus Riff Raff will be playing tracks from their new album ‘Hands On’,  the first airing since the album was released last April.  In addition the band will play their usual blend of classics throughout the afternoon and evening.  Plus, there will be the usual drinkie-poohs, nibbles and who knows what else.

Trusty Riff Raff keyboard player, El Ton Keys,  should be geared up to turn up this year without the phone reminder half way through proceedings. Unfortunately our bass player Pete is away so won’t be in attendance. But there will still be lots of stuff for the specially invited audience to enjoy.  So, looks like the Olympics will have to take a back seat for a few hours while Robfest is in progress. It’ll be worth it !

Cheers,  Rob.

The proposed new Jam Night, due to start tonight ( Tuesday 3rd July ) is OFF !

Due to ‘contractual’ reasons this new Tuesday night evening at The George in Pinner will not now be happening.  Sorry to all those who were looking forward to it but don’t forget Thursdays at The Middlesex Arms, South Ruislip is still very much on. See you there !

Cheers, Rob.

Latest News    :    Tuesday Jam Nights

King’s Arms ends, The George starts soon !

The Tuesday Jam Night which recently started at The Kings Arms in Hanwell is now defunct. This is due to the inability of some of the locals to act like civilised human beings in a public place. Gavin has therefore decided to pull the plug on it. … But … A new Jam Night is due to start on Tuesday 3rd July at The George in Pinner. I’m sure the locals will be a lot more friendly than at the last place !  It will be on every Tuesday, so make a note in your diaries  and come down !

Cheers,   BFN,    Rob.

Well, it’s been a few weeks now since the release of the Riff Raff CD,  ‘Hands On’ and the feedback we’ve had has been overwhelming.  Since the launch evening at ‘Shabby Road’, everybody who has played it so far seems to have enjoyed at least some, if not all, of the tracks and appear to have liked what they’ve heard.

To illustrate the point, there follows a review sent in by Brian Cope, a friend of mine from my Ealing days.  Brian is very much into the blues and also records his own songs, so it was great to receive such a positive response from him.  Brian e-mailed me a few days ago :

Rob.

Many thanks for sending me a copy of your CD. Damn excellent it is too !  You’ve certainly raised the bar with it. And a DVD too. Is there no end to this man’s talent !  Sorry for the delay in acknowledging receipt but after any initial listen in the car I wanted to sit down and and really listen to it again without any distractions before contacting you.  I’m really, really impressed with the quality of the song writing, the playing, the harmonies and the production. Top notch.  It’s probably risky for someone who stopped listening to popular music in the very early seventies to attempt a critique of the album but I thought I’d give it a go and my review is attached.  My apologies to you and the rest of the guys if I’ve missed the mark on any of my comments.

Best wishes,  Brian.

Brian’s review is as follows :   Riff Raff – Hands On (RK12)

Nothing excites me more than the arrival of a CD sized envelope and they are always eagerly opened, even when I know what will be inside. This was different. I hadn’t ordered any and I wasn’t expecting one as a competition prize. What could it be? I was soon holding in my hands a CD with strikingly impressive front cover and a simple but effective back cover. Riff Raff had arrived.

Listening to it later that day in the car I was immediately struck by the quality of the production. Clear vocals throughout and a mix that balanced the instruments to perfection made the 12 all original songs a delight to listen to. So what about the songs I hear you ask. Well there are some stunners here starting, appropriately, with track one, Perfect Crime (written by John Kempton) which could be the strongest track on the album with a great song structure, lyrics and terrific harmonies.

However the other writers can give him a run for his money with Rob Kemmenoe contributing two particularly good songs, Turn Around and Love me Too. The former is a catchy foot-tapper and the latter brings to mind the late George Harrison with both in feel and in the guitar solos. Good harmonies too.

John Kempton’s other three songs on the album all have a lovely 70’s sound to them with definite appeal for those who love the music of that decade. They are also sure to enjoy the songs by Ian Andrews especially You’ll Never Cross Me Again and Sorry For Any Delay which has a gentle country feel.

This is an impressive album in every respect. Terrific sleeve design, great music, tight arrangements, superb harmonies, first class production – in fact simple a quality product. I’ll be pleasantly surprised if the next professionally produced CD to arrive on my doormat gives me as much satisfaction as this one. Perhaps what is most striking about this album is the fact that the nearest it got to a professional studio and engineer is its recording location, Shabby Road (get it?) which provides a clue to Riff Raff ‘s influences. Get hold of a copy, get the flares and kipper ties out of the loft and sit back and enjoy.

Brian Cope

… So there we have it – another satisfied customer !  Many thanks to Brian for taking the time to write and send his review with these kind comments.

So make sure you don’t miss out. If you would like a copy of ‘Hands On’, or even just to sample the tracks, see the previous item  ” Get Your Hands On ‘Hands On’ ” ( scroll down )  or go to the Riff Raff page.  Go on, treat yourself and / or your friends to a Jubilee present and play it at your street party !  And then when the Olympics are on,  you can play it again,  either in the car in the Olympic traffic or when you’re sick of all the Olypnpic talk on the telly, you can turn off the ‘goggle-box’ and give your ears a treat by re-living the many varied delights of ‘Hands On’ by Riff Raff.

Hello all you Riff Raff fans out there. The big news for you all is that the band’s new CD entitled ‘Hands On’ is about to be released.

After nearly two years working on the project, the album will be released on Friday 4th May, with a celebratory private launch at ‘Shabby Road’ studios where most of the CD was recorded.  The whole band will be in attendance with their other halves.  Drinks and nibbles are ready to be consumed as well as the now legendary tea, ‘Russian Caravan’ whilst partaking of the viewing of the DVD.

The album will be available for general purchase on the internet in two or three weeks time. Details are still being finalised so be sure to watch this space !

See the  ‘Riff Raff’  page for more ! !         BFN,  Rob.

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we regret that the Riff Raff gig, due to take place this coming Saturday 21st April at The George inKingsbury, has been cancelled.

Apologies, if you were looking forward to seeing Riff Raff live again after all this time.

BFN,   Rob  ( on behalf of the Riff Raff boys )

John -Drinking all the Russian Caravan himself

Shock … Horror ! ! !   John didn’t bring the Russian Caravan !   Having arrived at the rehearsal studios on Tuesday night, to practice for the forthcoming Riff Raff gig at The George, it quickly became apparent that Johnny Unkempt hadn’t brought any Russian Caravan with him. Instead, his flask was full of sub-standard economy tat !  The whole rehearsal was thrown into chaos with this most serious of over-sights. But the session didn’t go too badly,  so I suppose we can let him off … just about.  When I think how I’ve pandered to his Russian Caravan addiction in my role as Director of ‘Shabby Road Studios’ and gladly poured him cup after cup after cup of the stuff !   And what’s more, he’s coming over to ‘Shabby’ tomorrow to sort out some of his guitar sounds. I bet I don’t have any tea left by the time he’s finished !

Anyway, I’m off to Jam Night this evening,  so I hope to see some of you there.

BFN,   Rob.
